DeepPavlov helps in implementing SDGs
Our team has started collaboration with the Armenia SDG Innovation Lab. DeepPavlov’s open-source library is used to facilitate the work at the SDG Innovation Lab. In the future it will help to automate real-time communication between citizens and governmental agencies.
The Armenia National Innovation SDG Lab was launched in November 2017 as a platform to promote and support implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Armenia and beyond. SDGs are the priorities for world development till 2030 established by the United Nations in 2015. As the agenda of SDGs are wide and complex, the Lab is aimed at helping policy-makers in providing more comprehensive evidence-based solutions for sustainable development. The lab is working closely with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
Machine Learning (ML) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are the major methods of some projects undertaken within the Lab. That is why the DeepPavlov open source library gives a boost to the Lab’s machine learning workflow. They mainly use the DeepPavlov multi–language BERT Named Entity Recognition model, in combination with the Stanford NLP morphological parser to extract information from texts in Armenian language. The lab has also tried to paraphrase detection and entity linking from DeepPavlov. For now the Armenian language models are unavailable, and the Lab is planning to develop a repository of datasets and pre-trained models. The experience of the Neural Networks and Deep Learning Lab is especially valuable as Russian is also a low-source language. One of the future tools developed with the help of DeepPavlov might be an automated real-time communication between citizens and governmental agencies.
The Armenia National Innovation SDG Lab is the first innovation platform created in cooperation between a state and the UN. Being a partner of it, the Neural Networks and Deep Learning Laboratory opens new opportunities for cooperation with international organizations, shares the knowledge about ML and NLP, and makes contribution to achieving SDGs.
The collaboration was established within the framework of the “Innovative Solutions for SDG Implementation in Armenia” project which is funded by the Russian Federation and implemented in close partnership with the Government of Armenia.
