Only the Democratic Party Can Save America Now
Donald Trump firing James Comey is a tipping point
Trump’s removal of FBI director James Comey was a blatantly transparent attempt to protect himself from Comey’s investigation of Trump’s ties to Russia and is thus tyrannical in nature.
This is a moment of truth for America. Trump and the unhinged überpartisan Republicans will now be able to appoint an FBI director who will, in effect, bury the FBI’s investigation of ties between Trump and Russia and Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Liberals and America are not winning. Every temporary victory is at the mercy of the presidents’ whims. The Muslim ban? Trump will have plenty of time to appoint judges to do his bidding — and an unusually high number of them, at that.
Compromised national security advisor Michael Flynn out? Trump is already souring on H.R. McMaster, Flynn’s replacement and one of the few “adults in the room” whom Trump-critics tell themselves will moderate the madness of King Donald.
Senate Republicans had zero women working on health reform after the House’s passage of Trumpcare. What does the Women’s March mean when Trump guts women’s health services, appoints judges who will take away women’s abortion rights.
“I’m trying to avoid the conclusion that we’ve become Nicaragua,” Gen. Michael Hayden, former NSA and CIA chief, said of Trump’s firing of Comey. “This is not normal,” said Jeffrey Toobin, CNN’s all-star legal analyst. And to quote Bill Maher — to those of you who though Hillary Clinton was merely the lesser of two evils, “go &^%$ yourselves.”
We’re in the middle of America’s worst political crisis since Watergate. In October 1973, Pres. Richard Nixon fired the special prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal. In Nixon’s time, significant numbers of Republicans put country over party and helped to lead the fight against Nixon’s abuses of power.
Does anyone believe today’s Republicans will do the same? Consider that, during recent hearings on Russia, Republicans were focused on leaks and unmasking rather than the actual threat to national security. Witness House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell defend Trump’s firing of Comey.
If you read the Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s letter about Comey’s firing, you’d think that Trump fired Comey because of his unfair treatment of Hillary Clinton during the investigation of her e-mail server.
Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Bitching About Poor James Comey Is Missing the Damned Point
Our resistance doesn’t hinge on Trump’s meddling at the FBI
There are three real reasons for why Trump fired Comey. Russia, Russia and Russia. And Trump made it clear that the investigation of both Trump’s ties to Russia and Russian election interference was at the center of his concerns when he mentioned that investigation in his own letter dismissing Comey.
It is fitting that Trump included what is virtually certainly a lie — that Comey thrice told Trump that Trump was not under investigation — in his own letter.
All this on the same day that a federal grand jury issued subpoenas in relation to the Russia investigation, just one day after Sally Yates told a Senate judiciary subcommittee she was fired after she had warned the White House about Gen. Flynn being compromised by Russia and just a few days after Comey had requested more resources to conduct his Russia investigation.
The evidence is piling up that Trump is somehow beholden to Russia. Still, not nearly enough Americans are paying attention.
If liberals feeling smug with their many marches think they and the nation are winning against Trump now, it’s time for them to wake up, put aside their boutique issues and unite behind the Democratic Party, which for all its imperfections is the only entity now able to stand up to Trump.
This needs to happen now, before we succumb to fascism.
