This was sprint 9 for User Centred Design Operations in Defra.

Below are the updates from each practice, and when you get to the end, there’s something to make you smile.

Design — Tom Frankland

This was a shorter sprint than usual due to annual leave, so the only goal from a design perspective was to continue to create consistency around the tools used by designers.

What went well

  • Started planning a cross-gov design meetup which will be hosted by Defra, hopefully taking place later this year 🤞
  • I met with a lot more designers again, this time from the trade programme. It was great to be able to expand the design community again.
  • I worked with the design community to publish a revised list of all the services designers are currently working on, including a list of prototypes. Having this resource as a single source of truth is really useful for a number of other design ops projects that we’re planning for the near future.

What didn’t go well

  • Nothing! ☀️

Content — TBC…

Watch this space! We are recruiting for content ops people in the next few weeks.

Research — Samantha Brown

I am going to be completely honest and say my goal this fortnight was to pass my interview for the role of research ops service manager. I personally find it hard to go for an interview for a job you’re already doing as you care so much about it.

Alongside this my goals where to help researchers plan a safe return to field based work and to raise the profile of our x gov re-ops-community

What went well

  • I have drafted a blog about establishing a X Gov Re Ops community
  • Wrote guidance to keep researchers safe in preparation for returning to face to face research (outdoors only) There are understandably mixed emotions about this. Please only go back out if you feel comfortable.
  • Drafted a job description and an advert for a new research ops role in co design
  • Created a slide deck (viewable to Defra staff only) on what we have achieved in Ops over the last 30, 60, 90 days and our goals for the next year. This was used during my interview.

What didn’t go well

  • Nothing :) Still missing Cerys though!
