Muscle Mimicry: How our thoughts generate micro movements invisible to the naked eye.

Believe it or not, our thoughts and emotions spark electrical signals invisible to the naked eye.

This component of the Emotional Contagion was discovered by the University of Iowa, where an undergraduate was wired with electrodes designed to measure facial EMG, heart rate, breathing rate and skin conductance.

EMG’s measure changes in electricity.

Half of the observers would gaze at a video of the candidate whilst the other would stare at a polygraph of the candidates bodily electrical responses.

Half noticed nothing, whilst the polygraph spotted dramatic changes.

The example shared by Hatfield et al mentions the following:

A small spike in the eyebrows electrical responses were associated to an argument with their roommate.

Later, a large spike — so large in-fact that it threw off the entire system, in the lip region was associated to the discovery of a great argument for his roommate.

This research raises the question:

If our thoughts or emotions spark electrical signals, is it possible to create said signals through an artifact or experience ?

Cheers,

Oscar
