Why Your Team Needs Freedom and Complete Autonomy
Startups are no small task, and when you go at it, you need a team that is as dedicated and passionate about the idea and the work as you. And if you’re as lucky to land an amazing team as I am, there are some steps you must take to allow everyone to unleash their creativity and true potential. Here are some approaches I use at Delect to enable my team to perform at the highest level:
Autonomy
When you bring folks on board to be part of the journey with you, you expect nothing short of them. But in order for them to do their job and excel, you must get out of their way. Autonomy allows your team to bring their expertise to the table, take full responsibility for their role and deliver. No one wants to be told what to do on a regular basis. And autonomy is a way to bestow trust on your team and enable them to work toward the vision.
Culture
In a startup, team culture is incredibly important. Everyone wants to work in a place where they can be their best selves, and contribute to the world in the process. And that also includes a place where they can have fun while changing the world. At Delect, I spend a lot of time listening to my team and we work hard to create a culture that is collaborative, stimulating, and a place where everyone wants to work.
Autonomy and a great company culture allow your team to flourish, put your mission first (in our case, improving the interaction between restaurants and customers), and feel like they are part of something — something that matters.
I’m incredibly proud of the team and company we’re building at Delect, and I’m incredibly thankful to have my team as part of the journey. None of this would be possible without you!
