Our content designers work across all of our consumer, rider and restaurant products — collaborating with a diverse set of disciplines, from design and research to product management, brand, legal and engineering. Here’s a day in the life of Rhiannon Jones, Staff Content Designer at Deliveroo…

9am-10am: Standups

Each morning, I’ll drop in on the standup meetings of the teams I’m working with and check in with them. I prioritise content-heavy projects (where we’re introducing a new feature, for example, or creating a text-based flow) and temporarily embed myself in that team. I have autonomy over what I prioritise, which is great. I get to seek out the juiciest projects!

10am: Pairing with a product designer

Today I’m partnering with Rob, one of our Senior Product Designers working in the Rider org. We’re collaborating on a new customer address flow. We want to make it easier for customers to give us an accurate delivery location, which in turn helps riders find customers faster.

We jump on a call and Rob walks me through his explorations in Figma. We try out some ideas together (in Figma we can both work on the same thing at the same time, which is a godsend). We hang up the call and I start a content strategy document, so I’ve got a record of our thought process.

11am-1pm: Crazy 8s

Our Design Manager, Alex, is running a remote design sprint to kick off a big project. Today we’ve teamed up members of the Experience team (product design, content design, user research) with a product manager, engineer and stakeholders from the commercial team to figure out the best way to approach the work. We’re doing crazy 8s — sketching out wild ideas for how we might present UI in the new flow. I won’t include them here, partly for confidentiality but mostly to save your eyes from my terrible drawings ✏️

2pm: WAYWO time

It’s time for WAYWO — What Are You Working On. It’s one of our longest-established team rituals. I take a screenshot of what I’m working on (researching different methods of adding addresses) and post it in the WAYWO channel on Slack. I get to see what other people are doing, too, which is funny and sometimes useful — especially when I spot a project I want to get involved in!

4pm: Pairing with localisation

I have a (remote) coffee with Anne Sophie, our genius Localisation Manager. She’s interested to hear about the customer address project as it needs to account for the address format of every local market, from Ireland (no postcodes) to Kuwait and Hong Kong. I walk her through the Figma file and get her feedback.

Anne Sophie! Legend!

4.30pm: Refining content with legal

Our legal team has reviewed some upcoming content for Deliveroo Plus, our subscription programme. Because we’re selling a subscription product it’s important to get the wording right. I update the content to take in their comments, before letting the engineers know it’s ready to be sent to our linguists for translation. We operate in 12 markets, so preparing content for accurate translation is an important part of the job.

5–6pm: Focus time 🎧

I love getting things done at the end of the day — it helps me feel productive before signing off. Today I review applications for our open Content Designer role in greenhouse and make notes on the candidates. We’re looking to quadruple the size of the content design team, so hiring is a big priority.
