I’m the current Exec Director of Finance, IT and Organisational Performance at Depaul UK, soon leaving to take up another role in the third sector (but not charity). I’m super-excited about the new job, but the move away from charity has been playing on my mind this week …

Visiting the new office

On Monday I visited the office, met with the team and my new CEO. The office space is incredible — even by Depaul’s standards, as we are very fortunate to have a lovely space. The banks of office desks are pretty standards but the breakout facilities are superb and really support collaboration and innovation.

The team seem amazing and so is my new boss. It will make leaving that little bit easier.

Ukraine

Depaul UK has a sister charity on the ground in Ukraine (Depaul Ukraine)and whilst it has been hard to hear of the conditions the staff there have been facing, it has helped to feel a little closer to the situation than we might otherwise have done. My IT manager has helped the staff secure reliable comms and networks, whilst our fundraising team have helped our parent company with their fundraising appeal. The staff are feeling the same way and are really keen to volunteer in whatever way they can. I feel a slight anxiety about leaving the sector and wondering how I can make a difference elsewhere. But I soon remind myself that the events of this week are exceptional and my new organisation also makes a huge impact on the lives many people. Social change isn’t limited to the charity sector — the Deloitte digital connect programme is a case in point.

By the end of the week I am as excited as ever about my new role, and thinking about the benefits that moving between sectors can bring.
