Spain celebrates record-breaking number of Blue Flag beaches

If there’s one thing Spain does well, it’s beaches. Of course, there’s also the bountiful sunshine, outstanding cuisine, championship-quality golf courses, fascinating history and rich culture… but when it comes to beaches, Spain leads the world.

Cala Mesquida beach — another Blue Flag recipient

The latest Blue Flag awards from the Association for Environmental Education and the Consumer (ADEAC) have seen Spain receive a global record-breaking 590 Blue Flags.

The Valencia region alone is home to 132 Blue Flag beaches, while Andalucía boasts 97. The coveted Blue Flag status is awarded based on a range of factors, including accessibility, health and safety, lifeguard provision and cleanliness.

The Balearics have won a total of 67 Blue Flags for beaches, marinas and a new category, sustainable vessels this year.

Mallorca has picked up three new Blue Flags, one for the popular beaches in Puerto Pollensa and Cala Major and the Real Club Nautico in Palma. Only one Mallorcan beach has failed to retain its flag, and that is Can Pere Antoni in Palma which, as a city beach, is fighting a battle to meet standards. Ibiza has lost two — Port de Sant Miguel and Santa Eularia — while Menorca has lost one of its flags at Port de Fornells. Find the map here.
