The unkind truth about ageing is that our social systems are not prepared for the crippling shift that’s underway in our communities, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.

In urban centres and rural areas, hospital beds are filled with elderly patients waitlisted for publicly-funded long-term care facilities. While they occupy acute care hospital beds — sometimes in overflow areas like hallways and dining areas — the average wait for transfer to long-term care is 1.5–2 years in my part of the world.

The ideal of ageing at home (particularly with dementia) is often unrealistic, but the alternatives are mired with overwhelming challenges.

♥ Do your friends and family know what your wishes are if you can’t speak for yourself? ♥

How you can be better prepared?

Make plans in advance.

April 16th is National Advance Care Planning (ACP) Day in Canada, a day to promote conversations about your wishes and values for your future health care. The ACP Canada website has resources, games and quizzes to help start the conversation.
