FLYING ECONOMY IN COMFORT

For the last 6–7 month, I became a regular traveler of flying the Surabaya — Bangkok route, whether it is via Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, or Singapore. When I fly, I usually fly solo, and sometimes it’s the 2 of us (with Dennis). I always fly economy — except when there’s an offer that’s hard to pass, such as extra extra mileage or a super cheap upgrade.

If you fly alone, it is a beauty to have the whole row of seats all for yourself, so you can easily sleep or sit comfortably.
This is what I do to get this luxury, which is proven to succeed at an 80% chance!

1. Doing your flight check-in online, last minute

Means you’re doing this after most of the passengers checking in already. If you see many seats are empty, your chance of getting the whole row for yourself is increasing by 50%!

2. Choose the seat at the back, but not too far behind

This is the most unpopular seat for people to choose when they are checking in themselves. I usually choose 3–6 rows from the back. Don’t choose the most back seat as most of them cannot be reclined.

3. Choosing the seat by the aisle

Because by nature, if you can choose, you wouldn’t choose a seat where there’s people blocking your access.

4. Reconfirm again during check in at the counter

Ask the lady/gentleman at the counter nicely, if the seat next to you is empty. They will be more accommodating if you’re flying long distance.

However, this trick will not work out if:

  1. You like to sit in front, which means you can go out from the plane faster
  2. Full flight, because there’s simply no chance of empty seats
  3. You’re just unlucky

Goodluck!!
