THE LONGEST CABLE CAR IN THE WORLD: VIETNAM

During a recent trip to the island of Phu Quoc in Vietnam (we’ll post separately on that soon and provide the link here then), we wanted to test out the new cable car that opened in February 2018 and transports you all the way from the southwestern part of Phu Quoc to the smaller island of Hon Thom. That’s a distance of just under 8km, which makes this cable car ride in fact the longest in the world, as acknowledged by the Guinness World of Records!

The ride takes around 15 minutes and is not for the faint hearted. If you’re afraid of heights, this will not be a comfortable ride. But for those of us, just like Lydia and I, who aren’t afraid to look down, it’s 15 minutes of absolutely stunning views of crystal clear water, remote villages surrounded by nothing but forest on tiny islands, floating houses, fisher boats and blue sky everywhere.

On Hon Thom, what awaits you is a new entertainment park by Sunworld, who also has a few other theme parks across Vietnam (such as in Da Nang). Luckily (?), when we were there in May 2018, construction of the actual theme park only really just began. Most likely once it is finished it will become a lot more crowded with people, and a bit less enjoyable as a result.

What is ready on the island is a nice beach with an inflatable obstacle course on the water and some restaurants in the vicinity. A free shuttle is provided to drive visitors from the cable car arrival to the beach. As it’s quite hot, sunny and hilly, I wouldn’t recommend even trying to walk there.

After a hot and relaxing afternoon at the beach we headed back again and once again enjoyed the breathtaking views from atop in our ‘private’ cable car…:

If you get a chance, you should definitely take the ride. Even without the intention to go to the island, the theme park, or the beach — it’s absolutely worth it! Tickets cost 500,000 VND per person (around 22 USD).
