For PGH Lab 5.0, we would like to welcome our newest testing partner, Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA). The ACAA oversees the Pittsburgh International Airport and the Allegheny County Airport, offering domestic flights, corporate travel, and flight training!

“Driving innovation is part of our mission at ACAA and PGH Lab is another connection to our region’s innovative start-ups and world-class tech economy,” said Katherine Karolick, Senior Vice President of Information Technology at the Allegheny County Airport Authority. “We are looking forward to exploring new ideas and concepts to continue driving efficiency and improving the passenger experience at Pittsburgh International Airport and Allegheny County Airport.”

The City of Pittsburgh and our testing partners, Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Parking Authority, and the Allegheny County Airport Authority today announce the start of the application for the fifth cycle of PGH Lab! July 25th marks the beginning of a new cycle in which we are dedicated to connecting local startups with authorities to pilot test their products or services. To date, we have had four cohorts and worked with 22 startups!

Through one common application, startups can propose their innovative solutions in four areas of interest. Selected startups will then be matched with a “City Champion” who works with them for three months.

Check out PGH Lab areas of interest:

  • Improve Operations: Further improve local government operations to make internal processes more efficient and effective. Solutions in the following sub area of interests will be highly encouraged: A) Process improvement: Help us reduce the time it takes to coordinate between projects and eliminate waste in the workplace; B)Smart Cities: Help Pittsburgh become a smart city by exploring newer and smarter technologies and the use of data to create economic development, enhance the quality of life for people, and improve wide accessibility specially for people with disabilities working and living in the city.
  • Citizen Engagement: Improve and increase citizen engagement capabilities in local government to ensure all Pittsburgh’s residents can easily access important information and resources. Propose solutions that can enhance the lines of communications between local government, non-profits, and citizens. Artists, graphic designers, and photographers are encouraged to submit citizen engagement solutions.
  • Climate Change & Environment: Climate and environmental change is among cities’ most pressing issues. Modern cities already monitor air quality, energy use, waste, and stormwater management. Help Pittsburgh become a more sustainable and resilient city. Solutions in sustainability, food waste management, and circular economy or reuse/creating new products out of waste and recycling streams are highly encouraged.
  • Other: Suggest a pilot project that does not fall under any of the previous categories but will benefit and make a great impact in the City of Pittsburgh and the participating organizations.

In a win-win situation, the startups gain real-time feedback from city champions, educational workshops, and access to the city’s network and partners, while at the same time the City benefits from testing new solutions and technology that can improve efficiency, transparency, and promote inclusion.

Do you have an innovative solution or know someone that might? Apply to take part in our newest cycle! We are accepting applications on our website from now until August 26, 2019.

PGH Lab brings local entrepreneurs to beta test products and services in local government for 3–4 months. Get inspired to start working on your own innovative ideas. Make sure to stay connected and ask questions about PGH Lab through our twitter!
