New York, USA — St. Petersburg, Russia

With A-list celebrity style on the runway and an iconic fashion lecture at the sidebar conference, DEPESHA continues its collaboration with the Aurora Fashion Week Russia in St. Petersburg. This October 15th — 20th, the American Program by DEPESHA will feature a spring-summer 2013 collection from designer Rubin Singer, and a landmark lecture by Dr. Valerie Steele, Director and Chief Curator of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

Rubin Singer is a third generation couturier with Russian roots. Before immigration his family dressed Soviet political and cultural elite as well as designed costumes for the Bolshoi and Stanislavsky Theaters. Today he is considered to be one of America’s most promising designers. He launched his label in 2007 after several years working under Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass. His design philosophy “Be ever-evolving and unique always” resonates with such clients as Beyonce and Solange Knowles, Heidi Klum, Glenn Close and other top music and Hollywood entertainers. His outfits regularly make various Best Dressed Lists, most recently including a coveted Vogue.com spot. The Tchaikovsky Hall show at the Manege on Thursday, October 22 (22:00h) Rubin’s first in Russia, marks an extraordinary homecoming for Singer family fashion legacy.

In partnership with DEPESHA, from Oct 15th to Oct 20th, the avant-garde hotel W St. Petersburg — steps from the city’s famed Hermitage Museum and St. Isaac’s Cathedral — will exclusively display in the W Living Room the dramatic black Rubin Singer gown worn by Beyonce during her “Proud To Be An American” performance at the Statue of Libery in New York City on July 4th, 2011.

Dr. Valerie Steele is one of the world’s most respected scholars of fashion, an authority on style as cultural phenomenon. She has curated numerous exhibitions and authored bestselling books on topics ranging from the history of the corset to comprehensive multi-volume clothing encyclopedia. For her first appearance in Russia, Fashion Theory editor-in-chief chose to deliver a landmark lecture as part of Fashionomica conference. Dr. Steele will highlight connections between homosexuality and fashion exploring the impact of queer personalities, trends and cultural contexts that have helped shape contemporary fashion scene. “One of the best things about the fashion industry is its openness to all kinds of creative people. For those of us who love fashion, it is necessary to credit these talented designers for giving the world so much beauty,” shared Dr. Valerie Steele. The lecture will take place on Tuesday, October 16 (19:00h).

“We are very excited to return to the Aurora Fashion Week Russia with all new American Program. As a gateway between Russian and American fashion and art communities, DEPESHA is proud to present Rubin Singer and his incredible story of family commitment to craftsmanship and style. We also believe in fashion as an interdisciplinary educational platform, and Dr. Steele’s lecture, in addition to being a fascinating cultural study, will contribute to the dialogue on the gay rights in Russia”, says Stephan Rabimov, DEPESHA publisher and editor-in-chief.

In addition to curating the American Progam, DEPESHA serves as an international media partner for the following Russian brands showcasing at AFW: Igor Gulyaev, Leonid Alexeev, and Pirosmani.
