Hello everyone, this is the 4th post on this blog and it’s the best time to share with you some history which stands behind the project name and logo.

Deplink name

Let’s start with the name. At the beginning I was thinking about cbuilder as a project name and this was development name used for the initial prototypes (first GitHub repository is still available). Of course there was one huge problem with this name - it was very strongly associated with the popular C++ Builder tool. After a few weeks I have 2 new names to choose from: Linkage and Deplink. As you can see Deplink wins only because this name, in comparasion to Linkage, was available at GitHub.

Deplink comes from 2 words - the dependency and linker (from the linking process). If you ask why not the Depman (dependency manager) then I’ll tell you that this just doesn’t sounds great. Instead Pacman (package manager) could be a great alternative!

The bad news is that there’re existing something called Deeplink (double “e”). I didn’t heard about it never before I bought the deplink.org domain. Now I’m don’t planning to change the name second time.

Dependency, module, package - all this words can be used as a synonyms in this case and brings to mind the cardboard packages. This is so obvious, the one correct way from the concept to the final sketch:

Why good design is the key to the success?

I suppose many of us make an opinion about product in a few minutes, or even seconds, from the first visit on the website. It could look modern or like an old “good” system which nobody knows it’s still in maintenance. If our application is well-written, but website looks like made in 90s then there’re less chance that someone will download it and try. The situation is changing a bit only if we’re developing a well know tool and we can neglect this topic a bit.

Of course good design must brings a good product. There is nothing worse than disappointment after a good first impression.

As a bonus I’m sharing with you the first image of the website design:

Would you like to help making Deplink branding? You could review blog posts (as you can see I need some help with my English skills), prepare marketing images or even contribute to project. Please leave a comment, thanks!
