Update for the Engram GUI wallet for DERO is full of new features
The DERO Foundation is happy to be announcing some of the new features that are going to be included in the next release of Engram. The Engram Team has been working very hard on all these features so first and foremost I want to thank them for all of their hard work. This next release is truly a home run and I hope you all appreciate it as much I do.
Now that we have that out of the way, we’ll move on to the fun stuff. We’re going to go over some things that are included and a few things that were removed from Engram. First we’ll start with a list of what was added to Engram in this release.
Sending and receiving funds and assets natively — this may be a given for funds but the ability to also be able to send and receive assets is a welcome upgrade for most users. An easy to use GUI interface for this is vital for making DERO NFTs and Tokens easy to use.
An Easier UI/UX — Many changes here to make Engram easier to use/troubleshoot, error handling and feedback as well as all common and known issues have been fixed. There has also been some graphical updates that make the wallet feel smoother and make the User Experience just that much better.
Private Messaging — Fees for messaging are now lower, more feature have been added and the UI has been improved for a better experience overall.
Gnomon Support — Gnomon is a decentralized search engine which is mostly used for searching for and identifying assets on smart contracts and is essential to the underlying functionality of certain dApps. It’s very powerful as well as useful and now supported.
Asset Tracking — Now, thanks to Gnomon support, Engram has built in asset tracking and management. Users can actually see the assets they own as well as send/receive directly from Engram.
Human-readable addresses (Usernames) — Engram now fully supports human readable addresses including the ability to register them, this was a hurdle for a lot of users trying to get their human readable addresses but now it’s super easy! For those that don’t know, on the DERO blockchain you can register a wallet address to a short, easy to remember name instead of using a long string of numbers and letters. For example, you could use the address “cupcake” to have people send you funds. Names are case sensitive though, so make sure you always pay attention to spelling and capitalization, it matters!
File Signing/Verification — With the next release of engram you perform file signing within the wallet. You can essentially verify files as if you were signing them with GPG.
Encrypting/Decrypting data — Not only can you verify files, you can also encrypt data strings. This feature doesn’t support full file encryption yet but for now you can encrypt smaller strings of data similar to an encrypted notepad.
Smart contract deployment/execution — Now, I asked in a twitter poll that included four features and asked users which one they wanted to hear about the most. This one by far was the subject people wanted to know about. In the new Engram wallet users will not only be able to dynamically interact with smart contracts in the wallet, they will be able to launch them using a GUI.
This makes launching smart contracts (even for us mere mortals) super easy to do. While this hasn’t been an issue for developers to use, the fact it will be so easy using Engram just lowers the barrier to entry even further to those that want to launch their own contracts without using complicated command line based RPC calls.
Smart contracts will be able to be launched by the wallet but there will also be an additional check to make sure that the contract parses correctly in DVM to at least catch some issues before launch. So, overall this should be a pretty cool feature for everyday users and developers alike.
Last but not least, let’s checkout Netrunner.
Now that the Engram team has given some key details on what they have added to the next release of Engram, let’s quickly cover what has been removed for stability reasons. This should help users who have been having issues with the wallet crashes. The following two items were removed from Engram but there is a standalone alternative already in place :
- Integrated Miner
- Integrated Daemon
These two items were just bundled together as a standalone GUI daemon and miner called Netrunner. You can get Netrunner at the address below to easily run your own DERO node and CPU mine.
https://github.com/DEROFDN/netrunner
Users that want to run their own node and mine with a GUI can still run Netrunner at the same time they are running Engram. Separating the daemon and miner from the Engram wallet itself was only done in order to fix the stability issues some users had and prevent panics.
Overall, this is going to make DERO even easier to use for more users and unlocking more utility on the blockchain by making it more accessible to everyday users. Having cutting edge technology while making it easy to use has always been the goal of the DERO project and the Engram team has delivered on that front!
As always, stay tuned and keep an eye out for the official release of the all new Engram wallet!
