Designs around us — III
I have been gone for a long time. Honestly speaking, I am not sure even if the blogging is going to be consistent (🙄Which blogger says that).
Design, a very subtle, yet crucial part of things we use. Without going gaga, presenting you a design around us today.
Card swipe machine:
Do you know what the yellow button does? What is usually the icon on the green button?
Most of us can’t tell but we, confidently, press green to go ahead with the transaction and press red with anything else.
What if you were to turn off the TV at a guest’s house? The icons and text of remote buttons being worn-out.
Simple, right. Point towards the TV and Press the red button.
Why did we make those decisions without going through the icon or text or asking someone?
Because of Colours.
Colours are great facilitators. With the correct usage, they guide us better.
- We can avoid reading the text or interpreting icons (Example: above).
- They can make us think twice when we are in a zombie-mode of completing a task. (Example, red stop signs or deleting a group on WhatsApp).
- They can help us in differentiating or attract attention to a particular part. (Example: offers or deals on websites and stores)
- They give us more confidence subtly, yes this is the action we have been meaning to do.
Lastly, colours add an extra dimension in interaction. Be aware, use them as mere facilitators, users should be able to use, even if it is black and white only.
