How writing landed me my first (& perfect) UX Design Job
I’ve seen a common trend in the UX/UI Design community. With so much driven, passionate talent coming into the space, it’s become really hard to get your foot in the door. Most companies call for two years experience, and aren’t willing to pay much for it. Job descriptions call for the “unicorn designer”, somebody who has:
- 8+ years in User Experience Design
- A formal, advanced education in Graphic Design, Interaction/UX Design or HCI.
- 6 years experience using Figma or Sketch
- Strong visual design and animation skills
- Experience creating a complex design system without any help
- Knowledge of developer languages SQL and C++.
Name one person that can do all of this. I’ll wait.
The reality is, companies would rather hire one senior designer than take a chance on one or two junior designers who haven’t established a track record yet.
On the jobseeker side, I’ve seen job prospects begging companies to just take a chance on them. And I get it — I’ve been there. It sucks, and it isn’t easy.
