A few of my favorite things

For this week’s design challenge, I thought I’d do something a little whimsical. I decided to create something related to “Favorites” within an app, and naturally the song “My Favorite Things” from The Sound of Music popped into my head. When I looked up the lyrics, I noticed an article about how the song came to be associated with Christmas, and I knew immediately that this was the right challenge for this week!

I thought it might be fun to use the favorite things that Julie Andrews sings about as inspiration, by displaying all of the “things” in card format, as though they were a user’s collections of favorites on a Pinterest-like platform.

I decided to make this fictional app pretty simple — with a clean sans serif for the header and labels, bold icons for navigation and adding new favorites, and an Instagram-style heart for the favorited items. In this design, each photo represents a collection of images that the user can organize and label. Finally, I added subtle drop shadows to the cards, the heart icon and the labels, to create a tiny bit more depth, and to give the white text better legibility.

I love the holiday season and the spirit of ringing in the new year. Even though we can’t all be together to celebrate like we normally would, I hope that everyone takes comfort in their favorite things, whatever they may be.

Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to those who celebrate!
