“Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.”

— Steve Jobs

Educate yourself

Familiarize yourself with the principles of UX design, including user research, information architecture, usability, and testing. The best part is that you can do this through online courses, books, and other resources. Yup! Instagram too.

Develop a strong understanding of user-centered design principles and methodologies.

Create your network

Attend UX-related events, conferences, and meetups in your area. There is no better way to meet experienced designers and learn about new trends and techniques. Attend UX events, join online communities, and reach out to other UX professionals.

Love scrolling through Instagram and Twitter? Follow UX designers and other influencers to learn and connect. Engage with their content and comment on their posts to start building relationships.

Great! You are halfway there.

Build a portfolio

You will need to demonstrate your design abilities and problem-solving capabilities to potential employers as a UX designer. Start building a portfolio of your work, including wireframes, prototypes, and finished designs.

Take an existing product and jot down your thoughts on how it can be improved. Once you have a basic idea of what to work with, you are ready for your first project. Start with a basic wireframe, and show how you developed that into a working prototype. Include mockups and polished designs.
