Pursuing mindfulness while working in tech
I’ve been working in tech long enough to know that mindfulness and screens rarely (if ever) mix.
I have tried a number of terrific apps designed to help with the practice of mindfulness. (The best two, imo, are Inner Garden and Oak.)
However, I’ve had to face the reality that mindfulness and presence cannot be found within screens.
Working from home
During COVID, I was sent home — like most tech employees — and had to suddenly share my living space with my workspace. There was plenty of support from work in terms of standing up tech to make working remotely effective — but little support in terms of, “don’t forget to log off at 5pm.”
My bed, couch, kitchen, bathroom — they were all just a few steps away from my “office.” I continue to work as a remote employee. Living in a city, I’m fortunate to own a condo with my partner. However, we’re not multi-millionaires, so it’s modest in size, and every square foot matters. Therefore, my “office,” is also the music room (my partner is a music teacher and I have some musical training), the guest room for when Grandma or Grandpa come to visit our 1.5-yr old, the dog room, the board game and book room, and up until recently — where my bike lived (mounted on a wall).
