Yes, the journey into digital payments began with vending machines in 1997, showcasing an early blend of need, technology, and design thinking.
This seemingly mundane act was a harbinger of the massive transformation that lay ahead for user experience (UX) and interaction design in the digital payment space.

The emergence of the Internet brought about the next major leap. PayPal, arrived on the scene just after that, to transform the digital payment landscape.
It was a masterclass in UX design, simplifying the complex process of online transactions into something as straightforward as sending an email.
This era underscored the importance of trust and ease of use in design, laying the groundwork for the user-centric payment solutions we see today.
A “fruit” revolution
As smartphones entered the market, they brought a new challenge and opportunity for design innovation. Apps like Venmo and Apple Pay redefined convenience, integrating payment functionalities into devices that became extensions of ourselves.
Designers now had to consider not just the visual aspect but the holistic user experience – security, speed, and simplicity became the pillars of mobile payment UX.
