User interface design

3 app designs that show the knowledge base landing screen and a topic landing screen

The intellin app is a diabetes management tool that provides users with tracking tools and insights about future health complications they may develop.

Product usage (April 2022): 850k lifetime downloads, 45k monthly active users.

Driven by user insights

Interviews and surveys were used to identify key areas for improvement within the intellin app. Users and industry experts highlighted the need for a reliable information source providing the user with the content that is most relevant to them.

Project outline

To re-design the ‘Tips’ area within the intellin app so that users can explore a library of clinically approved information. This project will make use of new content generated by the internal clinical team and surface new search and save functionality.

Information quality has been strongly linked to user satisfaction and motivation to use a system ¹

The interface was designed to convey a high level of information quality by supporting the following characteristics: variety, appropriate amount of information, ease of understanding, accuracy, currency and personalisation.

content tiles with 5 different styles and a glossary within the app which provides definitions on specific words

Variety

A varied and engaging mix of styles used to distinguish information and promote interest.

Appropriate amount of information

Different content types and formats established to allow for presenting both compact and extensive content.

Ease of understanding

Establishing a clear hierarchy, meeting accessibility standards and introducing an inline glossary supports better information processing.

Accuracy

‘Clinically approved’ badges within the knowledge base area to reassure users about the accuracy of the content presented.

Currency

Providing clear information to users about when content was last updated.

Personalisation

Relevant content is highlighted and surfaced first for users. Users can rate articles so that the system can become more intelligent. All articles and facts can be saved in custom collections.

Moving the design forward

This feature re-design is the first of many strategic updates to the intellin app. It is currently being evaluated as part of a usability study, the results of which are providing the necessary guidance for iterative improvements.
