Finding Confidence as a Self-Designer: Lessons Learned from Speaking to Hundreds of People
Last year, I spoke at a design conference attended by 400–500 people. As a self-designer, I felt insecure and questioned my ability to deliver an engaging talk. Why would so many people want to listen to me? Instead of letting these thoughts consume me, I decided to seek advice from friends who were experienced speakers.
I reached out to Saptarishi, the design director at Swiggy, for guidance on handling my nerves. His response completely changed my perspective on public speaking. He reminded me that the audience was paying to hear me speak because they believed in the value I could provide. This realization made me feel responsible for working hard and delivering an impactful presentation.
Excitedly, I took the stage as the last speaker of the day — ready to be a showstopper! To my delight, many attendees stayed until the end despite five hours of sessions before mine. After this experience, I went on a series of speaking engagements across different cities with newfound confidence thanks to Saptarishi’s advice.
If you ever doubt your abilities as a speaker or presenter, remember that your audience sees something valuable in you — it’s up to you to work hard and deliver what they’re seeking!
