“From Industrial Design to HCI: How My Bachelor’s Degree Paved the Way for My Master’s Studies”
Transitioning from Industrial design to Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) for a Master’s degree can seem like a big leap, but my Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design equipped me with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to excel in my HCI studies. I was pleasantly surprised by how closely intertwined these two seemingly different fields were. My transition from one to the other was seamless due to the similarities and overlaps in their concepts and skills.
I would like to share some valuable insights I have acquired while I am still doing my Master’s studies, as I am gradually gaining a deeper understanding of the field.
As a product designer, my approach to designing physical products involved understanding the user’s perspective and behavior towards them. This approach is similar to how HCI works in designing digital products, where the focus is on user interaction. I have experience in working with users and analyzing their behavior towards different products, and I acknowledge the importance of these principles while designing products that can improve the overall user experience.
I feel that developing any product or system requires a thorough understanding of various factors. Typically, there are four phases involved in this process, be it product design or human-computer interaction: Discover, Define, Develop, and Design. My background in product design has definitely helped me comprehend these phases and equipped me with essential skills and concepts such as user-centered design, design thinking, prototyping, and usability testing. I have learned how these aspects are relevant to designing both physical and digital products. While the most important thing to keep in mind would be to start empathizing with your user’s needs and preferences. Following this I Can definitely say I am now more capable of creating practical solutions.
What Inspired Me to Pursue a Master’s in HCI?
