How Artificial General Intelligence Will Impact UX
Designing Human-Computer Interaction for Advanced AI
Imagine creating a menu of options for a system that can do almost anything!
Remember when we thought touchscreens were the pinnacle of human-computer interaction? How adorably quaint that seems now! As we hurtle toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), the relationship between humans and machines is transforming so rapidly that our interfaces can barely keep up. And yet, the success of this technological revolution hinges not just on how smart our AI becomes but on how effectively we mere mortals can communicate with it.
I just finished reading Meredith Ringel Morris’s fascinating article “HCI for AGI” from the March-April 2025 issue of Interactions magazine, and it’s cracked my mind open a bit wider. Morris, a principal scientist at Google DeepMind, lays out a compelling vision for how human-computer interaction (HCI) research must evolve to ensure that increasingly powerful AI systems remain helpful, usable, and aligned with human values.
