The first rule of product management is listen to your customer.

At first my customers could have been speaking Klingon and I would have understood them better. Because they were lawyers, trying to figure out if they had found all of the electronic documents, like email and Word files, relevant to their lawsuit.

And I was software engineering manager.

How did I get in the middle of this?

I had just left a stressful job and had promised myself some time off, when I got a phone call.

“Do you know what a product manager is?” asked the voice on the other end of the line.

“Yes.” In theory, anyway.

“Would you like to be one?”

“Sure.” Why not?

So I entered the world of electronic discovery (eDiscovery) as a product manager, and started learning a new language. No, not Klingon. Legalese.

I met some lawyers. A lot of lawyers.
