It’s a new year with new jobs flooding into the market. Job hunting in 2023 may be more challenging compared to the past few years, given the recent hiring freeze, layoffs, or impending downsizing.

Job scams are becoming increasingly common in today’s job market. The scam methods are everchanging and often designed to take advantage of people who are in dire need of a job or people who are not super familiar with the job hunting process or norms. Victims of job scams often lose money, personal information, and even their identity. This is why it’s essential to be vigilant and know how to spot signs of a potential scam so we can avoid them.

Asked to provide personal information

There is a set of basic information that is considered appropriate for employers to request during the interview process. For example:

  • Contact information such as name, phone number, or email
  • Background and education information
  • References and their contact information
  • Job and skill-specific questions, such as your qualification and job hunting status
