Influence of Bauhaus in my UX/UI Design work

--

The Bauhaus school, Source

I’ve always been extremely fascinated by all things design, and in the early days of my career, most of my work and mindset were influenced by industrial design and where it came from. Like many of the other fellow designers, one of the movements that always fascinated me was the Bauhaus and how its philosophy, work, and way of teaching shaped the modern world of industrial and digital product design.

Throughout my life, I’ve been surrounded by a lot of talks about designers, especially artists, because of my mother’s background and interest in art and textile. Artists like Wassily Kandinsky and Piet Mondrian have had a marked impact on my life and how I’ve grown to view everything.

In my own experience as a designer, I’ve found that adhering to Bauhaus principles can lead to more impactful designs. For instance, when tasked with creating UI for a sustainable B2B client, Cyan Advisories, I drew inspiration from Bauhaus by using a geometric sans-serif typeface, a vibrant color scheme, and geometric shapes.

Below is a snippet of my free work at Figma Community called, 12 Free Responsive Layouts with Font Pairings, where I freely explore the possibilities of using Bauhaus philosophy in my designs.

Here are some of the pointers I always keep in mind while creating a design, ever so influenced by the Bauhaus movement:

  1. Bold Typography: I love using strong, clean fonts that grab attention and keep things clear, which feels very Bauhaus.
  2. Minimalism: I aim to strip away anything unnecessary and focus on what really matters, keeping my layouts clean and impactful.
  3. Structured Layouts: I naturally gravitate towards grids and organized compositions to keep my designs balanced and easy to navigate.
  4. Asymmetry: I like playing with off-center layouts that feel dynamic but still harmonious — something Bauhaus nailed.
  5. Text + Imagery: I always try to blend text and visuals in a way that feels seamless and purposeful, much like the Bauhaus approach.
  6. Color Choices: My use of bold or limited palettes ties back to Bauhaus’ love for simplicity and strong contrasts.

For me it has always been creating designs that are functional, clear, and visually striking, which aligns with the Bauhaus philosophy. Bauhaus’ enduring appeal of minimalism, designing for clarity and purpose, balancing aesthetics and functionality has always helped me create designs that have a fun and impactful feel, even for a fleeting period of time.
