Layers of AI — Relooking AI and the role of Design
“AI is going to take our jobs!”, the fear echoes everywhere, and design is no exception.
But is AI truly the villain here? Or is it the way we approach it?
For decades, technology has been dominated by engineers, leaving designers confined to their roles of building UIs and remaining a support function within the organizational structure.
The same wave is seen even in the age of AI. Because designers lack technical skills, the question is, how can they contribute to shaping an AI-based solutions? Unlike traditional materials like pixels or interactions, AI is dynamic, unpredictable, and deeply intertwined with human values. The biggest challenge according to the paper ‘Designerly Understanding: Information Needs for Model Transparency to Support Design Ideation for AI-Powered User Experience,’ is understanding AI as a design material.
Instead designers are trying to understand the designerly version of AI as a technology so that we can generate value for users. Though AI comes with many promises, AI-powered products can deliver superior customer value only when UX is integrated early in the process.
