In this post, I’ll share a prompt template to help you utilize V6’s capabilities for clearer, more defined multi-subject images.

Prompting Multiple Subjects

The key to prompting multiple subjects in V6 is giving Midjourney a clear semantic link between the overall scene and the individual details.

V6 doesn’t require any special prompting, but a starter template suggested by Midjourney will help you explore what works well for multiple subjects in V6.

Today’s content will be broken down into three parts:

Part One: The 4 Main Sections

Whether starting with Midjourney or looking to improve your prompts, following this structure can lead to better results.

Prompt: [archetypal scene] [call-back details] [setting details] [vibe or aesthetic]

The 4 main sections in your prompt:

1. Archetypal scene
2. Call-back details
3. Setting details
4. Vibe or aesthetic

Let’s get into the details of each section

1. Archetypal Scene

First, set up the overall scene using generic terms and archetypes in the first statement.

There’s a sweet spot for specificity here. It doesn’t have to be very long. You’ll add details in a moment.

Good: Three friends sitting on a park bench.

✅ Better: Three different friends sitting on a park bench. (Without "different" Midjourney gets to decide their general appearance and they may appear similar.)

✅ Best, get specific: Three different best friends sitting close together on a park bench. (Without “best friends” and "sitting close together" we get a more generic vibe.)

2. Call-Back Details

For prompts where it makes sense to do so, use call-backs to add details. That is repeat the very same words used in the scene set-up.

Add descriptive details for each subject in simple sentences, using call-backs to the keywords in the initial scene.

Our set-up was: Three different best friends sitting close together on a park bench.

So our details should be written like this…

✅ It uses a simple sentence and a call-back of “the friend”: The friend in the middle is a cheerful blonde Caucasian woman wearing jeans and a green tank-top.

But we may find these alternatives unreliable…

❌ Not great, it doesn’t use a call-back:
Jennifer is in the middle, a blonde Caucasian woman wearing jeans and a tank-top.

❌ Not great, it doesn’t use a simple sentence: In the middle, wearing jeans and a green tank-top, is the Caucasian friend.

3. Setting/backdrop/background/context

Then provide some context by describing the setting/background. Place these details toward the end to avoid blending.

❌ Not great, it’s sort of vague for V6, might work: There are live oaks and pigeons.

✅ Better, getting a little more clear: There are some pigeons on the sidewalk. In the background are some live oaks.

✅ Get specific: There are two pigeons on the sidewalk in front of the bench. In the background, the empty park contains some old live oak trees.

Be prepared to roll specifics back or out of the prompt if you start seeing things become incoherent.

4. Vibe or Aesthetic

Finally, indicate the overall vibe, aesthetic, medium, or style you want at the end of the prompt. Be as specific as possible by naming artists, genres, etc.

It can be as long as you like.

Photographic:

❌ Not great: Photo.

✅ Better: Wildlife photography.

✅ Best, name specific inspirations like a photographer’s name or a publication: Wildlife photography inspired by National Geographic magazine.

Not photographic:

❌ Not great: Art.

✅ Better: Post Impressionism

✅ Best, use adjectives and name specific inspirations like artists or a type/school/genre/medium of art: Post Impressionism Painting by Vincent Van Gogh

Now, let’s apply the structure and explore how we can utilize it in prompt writing

Example 1 — Three Different Best Friends
