Product Managing with ChatGPT: top prompts to leverage AI into your product strategy
From discovery methods to behavioral data analysis, AI can boost Product Management strategies with useful insights and a lot of time-saving tools. In this article, I discuss the top prompts you should be using right now to have your own “AI assistant” set up.
As Cassie Kozyrkov, ex-Chief Decision Scientist at Google, recently mentioned:
Firstly, never trust anything you haven’t tested thoroughly. Secondly, stop reading about GPT-4 and go spend that time getting your hands dirty with it.
Large Language Models (LLM), such as ChatGPT, and AI image generators, such as DALL-E and Midjourney, are currently the most cutting-edge tools available to the general public. Therefore, instead of just reading about them, you must try them yourself.
(No hard feelings if you simply leave this page right now. Really.)
But in case you come back, and assuming you’ve learned the 101s of ChatGPT — basically, you log in, type whatever text you feel like, and then press ENTER —, let’s move forward to AI-power your Product Management role.
First of all, you have to declare a few “boundaries” where you want to keep the outputs. In other words,
you need to tell ChatGPT it is a Product Manager working in [describe your market segment] for company [with several details][in a given development/economic stage], where you co-create [type of products].
Those contextual details are a pre-req to make generic responses metamorphose into valuable outputs.
With this in mind, here’s my list of the top prompts I’ve come across and tested, divided into 4 categories. Those have been supporting my journey in health techs for the past 3 years and will likely help yours, too.
01. Product Discovery prompts
Brainstorming
- Create a list of product ideas/concepts for a [feature description/user pain point/business idea/gap in existing process/trend]. What are some unique features that could be added to the [product/service]?
Market Research [1]
- What are the main trends in [industry]?
- Who are our top 3 competitors in the [market]? Describe their strengths and weaknesses.
- Write a product comparison chart between those competitors.
- What are the key drivers of customer purchasing decisions in [market segment]?
- What are the most common customer pain points in [market segment], and how can our [company, assuming you have contextualized it beforehand] address them?
- What is the projected growth rate for the [market] over the next [#] years?
- What are the latest innovations and technological advancements in the [market]?
- What are the key regulations and compliance issues in the [market]?
- What are the key success factors for companies operating in the [market]?
Personas
- Create a customer persona in [target market] for [product], considering [demographic/market/social/economic attributes].
- What are the key characteristics of the ideal customer for [product]?
- What is the typical demographic of customers for [product]?
- What are the key touchpoints and interactions our target customers have with [product]?
(Please, note that all the aforementioned entries are part of Anil Tilbe’s own list of PM prompts.)
02. Product Development prompts
Product Requirements Document (PRD)
- Write a detailed Product Requirements Document for a [feature, in details]. Users can [describe functionality 1] and [describe functionality …n]. [Describe other possibilities.] The document should include the business background, related metrics, risks, technical requirements, and main user flows.
- Some months ago, I gave CharPRD a couple of tries. There is a free trial available, and it was very helpful in defining a template for all future PRDs in the company. Still, it requires a lot of interactions until it finally ‘understands’ your context, and starts contributing with better results.
User Experience
- You are a UX Designer. Your job is to come up with inventive ways to improve user experience with our [app/site/feature], and involves creating prototypes, designing ideas, and providing feedback on what works best. My first request is ‘I want you to consolidate user reviews, highlighting the pain points and opportunities for improvement. Then, suggest actions to adjust [choose item].’
03. Product Launch prompts
Product Marketing
- You should act as a prompt generator for Midjourney’s AI system. Your job is to provide detailed and creative descriptions that inspire unique and interesting images. Keep in mind that the service is capable of understanding a wide range of language and interpreting abstract concepts, so feel free to be as imaginative and descriptive as possible. The more detailed and imaginative your description is, the more interesting the resulting image will be. Here is your first prompt: ‘[type here a general description of the kind of image you are interested in].’
(This last entry is particularly useful for creating images to be placed on landing pages, in-app banners, and social media/e-mail campaigns.)
Release notes, press release, and user guides
- Write a clear and concise product description for our new [feature/product/service].
- Create a user guide for our [product], including step-by-step instructions for key features.
- Generate a list of FAQs for [product].
- Create a list of feature benefits for our new [product] and how it addresses customer needs.
- Generate a list of common use cases for [product] and how it can be used in different industries. Write a product launch press release for [product].
- Prepare a script for a [product] demo.
Social Media
- I want you to act as a social media influencer. You will create content for various platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, or YouTube and engage with followers to increase brand awareness and promote products or services. My first request is ‘I need help creating an engaging campaign on Instagram to promote [describe your feature]. The post should be brief and exciting. Do not use acronyms or abbreviations.’
04. Data analysis prompts
A/B Testing
- You are an experienced Data Analyst. Consider [company scenario] and [product or feature description]. We ran an A/B test with the following [data + context]. Analyze the results, considering additional data from [market segment] that might be relevant, and raise a new hypothesis. Ask for further data, and improve your analysis with it.
For a successful result, scenarios like the previous one require what is often called “chain of thought prompts”, i.e. you incentivize the model to produce intermediate reasoning before the final output. This helps it enhance the analysis, calibrating the answer with data that might not have been provided before, or could be complemented.
KPIs
- How can we measure the success of [product]?
- What are the industry benchmarks for [product] [KPI]?
- What are the key drivers of [product][KPI]?
Coda
Context matters! ChatGPT/Claude will likely return useful outputs as long as you provide it with enough context on where you are as PM. It might take a while until you’re used to this, but keep in mind to:
- Give clear instructions.
- Describe the context in detail.
- Use roles to change its perspective on a subject.
- Build reasoning in steps with chain-of-thought prompts.
Seats are still available in the front rows — don’t miss it!
Notes
[1] ChatGPT-3, which is available free of charge, is “stuck” in 2021. Hence, you should be careful when using any kind of info regarding market research, as they may be outdated.
