Should UX Designers Learn FE?
Will learning FE improve your chances of getting a job or is it only a distraction?
It’s common to see developers making the jump to UX design, but the reverse? Not so much.
That raises an interesting question:
Does having front-end development (FE) skills as a UX designer actually give you a competitive advantage?
The short answer is yes, but it depends…
You already know my opinion on this, I think that the professional of the future should have enough knowledge to leverage AI and automation to their advantage, and yes, that includes coding and development skills.
Whether you make time to learn it or not depends entirely on your current role and its necessity. Just like you prioritize product features, you should use ICE to evaluate and design which skills will make the biggest impact in your career.
As a practical example, I created an ICE Scoring Model that evaluates skills based on Impact, Confidence, and Ease, with each factor scored from 1 to 10. The final score is the average of these three values:
