There’s a reason I stopped using Spotify, and it’s a reason I believe we are more aware of with each passing year it remains as an option on the music streaming market. Spotify, in all its splendor, is simply another distraction — an app that, even when offering a seemingly endless array of choices, still bombards us with information overload. Spotify is like a buffet that simply doesn’t think about going for a theme and instead just includes anything and everything it possibly can.
However, Spotify’s dilemma is less of a “choice problem” and more of a design problem.
While it is commendable that the company posted a profit for the first time ever in 2024, Spotify’s product offering risks becoming inundated with profit-seeking motives that will damage the user experience for some of its older and more experienced users. As one of those users (who promptly left out of exhaustion and apathy for the app), I can say one thing is for certain: Spotify is losing the simple, elegant luster it once had.
