Staying Motivated in the Age of AI
Every time I go on LinkedIn, I am inundated with two types of posts:
- Someone being VERY excited about the latest AI product/feature/update/capability.
- Someone being laid off due to AI.
This is obviously a generalization — but there does seem to be a certain insanity to the tech community right now. Microsoft is laying off people due to AI, Duolingo’s CEO is explaining how AI will impact their hiring, and Google just released “Stitch,” an AI UI generator.
On one hand, the age of AI is at hand, and I am in the process of being rendered obsolete. On the other hand, I have to go to work on Monday and design things in Figma.
On one hand ChatGPT can now generate images. On the other hand, I am sitting through meetings to discuss which photo we should use in a design.
On one hand, I’m hearing about a new age where I’m going to be vibe coding enterprise software soon. On the other hand, I’m struggling to get a simple feature out the door with a team of engineers.
But the really big challenge is — how do I stay motivated?
The Early Days of Figma
I remember when a colleague and myself helped transition our design team from Sketch to Figma. I remember the excitement and energy…
