A woman screams and points at the screen, IT’S AI! (the image is also AI)
This is indeed, AI.

The award for New Dumbest Comment (NDC) has officially been passed to:

Vague and uneducated accusations of AI.

A recent post in the r/StrangerThings Subreddit posed the question:
“Does this character look like AI?”

Were they referring to some fantastical being or CGI? No…

It was a first look still.
Of a group of human kids.
From the upcoming season.

Not AI, Sherlock.

The frame in question.

A friend of mine recently passed along a similar story. The image in question:

Two global celebrities.
On the cover of a widely circulated magazine.
Photographed by a famous photographer.
Yet and still…is it AI?

That didn’t take long.

For the uninitiated — which is for now, most of the general public— AI is currently still a buzzword. They’ve seen a couple memes, made a free action figure with ChatGPT, and have decided to feel smart on the internet.

It’s a sizable problem now, and about to become massive.

No one is going the believe A N Y T H I N G.

The above are decent examples, but this is my favorite so far:

The award winning, single shot, in-camera Volvo ad.
With Jean-Claude Van Damme.
Doing splits between two semi-trucks.
From 2013.

Granted, awesome.

Wow I thought this was AI!

Done for real, no like for real, with real people and stuff.

A bad omen.

You know how people with zero knowledge of visual effects like to pontificate on how the ‘CGI was crap!’? We are entering a whole new world of hurt with ‘Nice AI slop!!’ said about well, everything.

Proving you DIDN’T use AI is now going to be a new metric.
Key word here being PROVE.
People won’t believe you.
It’s already rampant.

Obviously, AI is a big issue far beyond photography and entertainment. It’s likely the most consequential piece of technology in our lifetime. Someone will go to prison, or start a war, all because of faked AI images or videos — and the people who believe them.

The Bottom Line

It’s no time to be dumb.
Educate yourself.
And your dumb friends.
And don’t use the NDC every time you see something.
