It is becoming more common for apps, websites, operative systems and other digital products to have a dark mode option available for their users. But why has this become so essential? What makes dark mode so successful, and what is it really used for?

What is dark mode?

The world of interfaces is ever-changing and mutable. While in light mode, we see a bright background with dark text. Meanwhile, when we speak of dark mode, it’s usually referring to the layouts that use dark backgrounds with light text over them.

If we think back, historically, computers originally used this “new” dark mode colour contrast.

When is it used?

Right off the bat, there is no right and straight answer to this question. We see it being used widely in various interfaces, but there are some cases where we can see a trend.
