When it comes to managing projects, there are two main approaches: traditional and agile. Both of them has their own strengths and weakness, we should know the difference so we could implement it in our project.

What are the differences between these two?

Let’s deep into it!

Traditional

Traditional processes, also known as the Waterfall model, are characterized by a linear, sequential approach. This means that each phase of the project must be completed before moving on to the next. The simple definition is a methodology that adapts water flow and can't flow back.

The phases:

  • Planning
  • Design
  • Development
  • Testing
  • Deployment.

Pros:

  • Easy to understand and implement: It is also useful when the project requirements are well-defined and unlikely to change.
  • Provides a clear structure for managing the project, with well-defined roles and responsibilities.

Con’s:

  • Inflexible and can be difficult to adjust if the project requirements change.
  • This can lead to delays and cost overruns if changes are not managed effectively.
  • Difficult to get feedback from stakeholders during the development process, which can lead to a product that does not meet their needs.

Agile

Agile processes, on the other hand, are characterized by an iterative, collaborative approach. The focus is on delivering a working product as quickly as possible and then refining it based on feedback from stakeholders. This means that the development process is broken down into small, manageable chunks, and each chunk is tested and refined before moving on to the next.

Pros

  • Flexible and can adapt to changing requirements.
  • Encourages collaboration and communication between stakeholders and team members, which can lead to a better end product.
  • Help identify problems early in the development process, which can save time and money.

Con’s

  • Difficult to manage and requires a higher level of collaboration and communication.
  • It is challenging to estimate project timelines and costs, as the development process is constantly evolving.

Which One to Choose?

So, which approach should you choose? It depends on your project requirements and goals. If your project has well-defined requirements that are unlikely to change, and you have a clear understanding of the timeline and budget, then the traditional approach may be the way to go.

On the other hand, if your project is complex, with changing requirements and a need for constant feedback and refinement, then the agile approach may be a better fit. It is also useful if you are working on a product that requires frequent updates and improvements based on user feedback.

We can’t follow Tren if our product doesn't meet the requirement of the methodology. So, better to plan it well before stepping more.
