UX Case Study: Waiting in Line Boredom (Cafe) ☕️
Hi everyone! My name is Rawan Alasmi. I am a passionate front-end developer. This is the first time I have had an official blog account, and I hope to meet more like-minded people on Medium!
Misk UX Immersive Course
I had experience with a start-up company as a mobile developer during the last six months. through that experience, I worked in many roles. Sometimes as a developer, other times I tried to educate myself to explore different areas such as digital marketing, UX, and graphic designing.
Since I finished more than 5 courses with Misk, I tried to join their UX immersive course to dig deep into the UX field.
I remember how excited and lucky I was when I got the email informing me of the acceptance in the UX immersive course and I hope it will not be the last.
About the Project
Team: Me, Mai Alsaab, Yousef Alsalem, Danya Alghamdi.
Project duration: 5 days
Tools: Mural, Miro, GoodNotes 5, Google Slides
Goal: make a UX research and designing a solution to meet users’ needs.
Background
Coffee shops have become a trend. Our team wants to create a digital product (desktop or mobile app) for people who love drinking coffee at all times. Since coffee lovers usually have a busy schedule, our prouduct aims at optimizing study plans for busy coffee lovers.
This project is divided into 3 main stages: discover, define, and design.
#1 Discover
Research Goal
The main objective is to figure out how individuals normally avoid waiting in line at “Over D” Coffee House. From the study, we want to discover what opportunities and needs might exist for solving the waiting problem. Furthermore, these findings will help us shape the direction in order to develop our product.
User Interview
We conduct 13 participant with asking them 9 questions for 30 minutes in-person.
#2 Define
Affinity Mapping
Findings
People are waiting for too long for their orders in line, and some of them do nothing and others use their phone for reading email, playing, or socialize.
Insights
Most people feel bored during waiting time, but it seems that they like to spend their waiting time on the phone. However, since “Over D” doesn’t provide a technical way to use that fact to make the ordering process easier and the waiting time less boring, we will try to provide an application to do so.
Problem Statement
One of the problems that OverD customers face is the need to wait for a long time in the cafe to get served. Our solutions should provide the customers with a better buying experience.
Solution
We decided to create an app for Over D customers that will allow them to place their orders without waiting in line for a long time. In addition, the app will provide a variety of activities to keep the customers entertained while they wait.
#3 Design

Reflection
I learned a lot from this experiment. I understand how to set a goal that will lead us to build a good product. Plus, how to conduct users, make them feel comfortable to engage with us, and collect correct data from their answers. Also, I learned there is a process for the user journey inside the app, and we need to design it to achieve better results.
