UX Research Case Study: How do we teach kids about consent?
Creating a product to empower kids from a young age
Problem
Teens in Spain are poorly informed about sex, bodily autonomy, and consent, and begin to explore their sexuality without proper guidance.
Why is this a problem?
If young people are not clear about what consent is, it leads to dangerous and painful situations. For instance, being recorded, being touched inappropriately, early exposure to porn, or being sexually abused.
The lack of knowledge of contraception can lead to the spread of STDs, HIV, and teen pregnancy.
Not having a healthy view of sex can damage how a person sees their own body and the body of others.
Young women might not be aware of the risks involved in taking the morning-after pill, and how it affects their cycle.
How I learned about the problem
I educated myself by researching the most available data, reports, articles, documentaries, and more.
- Sex education for minors in Spain is not a compulsory subject. The latest educational reform says sexual education is important, but it doesn’t give it a proper space.
- I interviewed a school vice principal to learn about the school’s curriculum
- I learned about the sex ed class given to 15-year-olds and attended one.
- I interviewed the midwife who provides these workshops.
Before thinking about a solution, one must grasp the complexity of an issue and its many layers.
