Weighing Career Decisions (in Tech)

3 min readMar 14, 2022

--

When facing a job change decision, there are three key factors to consider:

1. What’s your original motivation for the change?

Does this motivation remain?

2. Are you passionate about the future work?

Changing companies is nebulous as internal company cultures vary widely. In addition, consider the specific nature of the work you will be doing in the role. Who would you be working with on a daily basis?

3. What is the offer?

How does the compensation, title, benefits or responsibilities compare to your current work? Is there equity and what are the details of the vesting schedule/cliffs?

Weighing your response

After reflecting on the three questions above, consider how important your reason is behind each question, plotting them in a mental chart. The more strongly you value the reasoning, the higher the bar.
