What makes a good leader
In the current context, as Romania prepares to choose its next president, I’ve been reflecting on the concept of leadership. Observing the political discourse and listening to public opinion, I can’t help but notice how misunderstood leadership often is and how little emphasis is placed on the essential traits of a good leader. This has inspired me to share my thoughts on what makes a good leader — whether of a country or an organization — and to outline the values I believe are critical in leadership.
Misconceptions About Leadership
In many situations, people equate good leadership with autocratic leadership. Autocratic or authoritarian leaders are often characterized as individuals with ultimate authority and power over others. They make decisions based solely on their own ideas, without seeking input or collaboration. Some believe such a leader will emerge, take command, and “save” them or the situation. However, history repeatedly teaches us that this is far from the truth. In fact, in my opinion, such leaders are among the worst, as their approach stifles collaboration, creativity, and trust.
Essential Leadership Traits
Here are the traits and values I believe define great leaders and that I try to follow and implement:
🔮 Visionary Thinking
A great leader must have a clear vision of what they want to achieve, both in the short and long term. However, vision alone is not enough; they must effectively communicate this vision to their team, stakeholders, and anyone who can contribute to bringing it to life.
🗺️ Adaptability
While leaders need a clear vision and long-term goals, they must also adapt to changing circumstances. Plans must evolve to reflect the realities around them, ensuring progress continues in the right direction.
As the saying goes, “The only constant in life is change.” , adaptability allows leaders to thrive in dynamic environments by embracing innovation and finding creative solutions to challenges.
Under the umbrella of adaptability lies resilience. Difficult times are inevitable, and leaders must persevere through challenges, inspiring their teams and maintaining morale. Resilient leaders help their teams remain determined and resourceful, even in the face of setbacks.
☕️ Openness to Conversation
Effective communication is at the heart of good leadership. Strong communication and negotiation skills allow leaders to build relationships, secure resources, and form valuable partnerships.
Within teams, open communication creates an environment where members feel empowered to flag potential issues, share suggestions, and propose solutions. A leader who understands, values, and listens to others fosters a supportive and motivated team.
💙 Integrity
Integrity is the foundation of trust. A leader with strong moral principles is honest, transparent, and ethical. They stand by their words and align their actions with their promises, earning the respect and confidence of those they lead.
🎁 Charisma and Confidence
Charisma can take a leader far. Charismatic leaders inspire and captivate their teams with enthusiasm and passion. They motivate others by recognizing their strengths, celebrating achievements, and providing encouragement.
Charisma also plays a critical role in negotiations and partnerships, enabling leaders to gain support and resources. Confidence, balanced with humility, instills trust and fosters lasting alliances.
⚖️ Accountability
A great leader must take responsibility for their actions, decisions, and outcomes — owning both successes and failures. Accountability fosters transparency, builds trust, and demonstrates a leader’s commitment to continuous learning and improvement.
The benefits of accountability in leadership include:
- Building Trust: Owning outcomes — both good and bad — creates credibility.
- Improved Decision-Making: Learning from mistakes leads to better future decisions.
- Enhanced Performance: Accountability sets clear expectations, driving productivity and results.
Choosing the Right Leader
Whether selecting a leader for your country, organization, or team, seek someone who embodies these qualities. A visionary with integrity, a person who understands their limitations and seeks expert advice when needed, and a leader who maintains an open-door policy, encouraging ideas and collaboration — these are the traits of someone equipped to guide their team to success.
As a closing word, I want to advise you to choose your leaders wisely. Their vision, values, and decisions will profoundly shape not only your future but the future of those around you. The right leader can inspire growth, foster unity, and drive progress, while the wrong one can instill discord and stagnation. This choice carries significant weight, so approach it with care, foresight, and a deep understanding of the qualities that truly define great leadership.
