Why ChatGPT can replace writers — and why it can’t

There’s always two sides to every story.

I am doomed. My life is over!

This was the first sentence my writer friend said to me as I walked into her apartment yesterday.

My natural instinct was to console her. After consoling her for full five minutes, I remembered that I don’t even know what the problem is.

Yes, I’m that bad of a therapist!

The problem was that she had read an article about ChatGPT and now she was scared that it would take her job.

Now that I knew what the problem was, I should’ve been able to console her, right? I didn’t. Instead, I told her that it definitely would and immediately felt bad because she started crying.

But don’t worry, she had a huge smile on her face after I told her what I’m about to tell you.

Why ChatGPT can replace writers?

First of all, I need you to relax. ChatGPT will only replace the writers who work like it. Let me elaborate.

How does an AI work? By building onto the things already available to it, right?

And who likes competition?

So if you are someone who takes a topic, finds 3 or 4 articles on it, then merges and mashes them together to create a new article, then yes, ChatGPT will replace you.

In fact, it already has!

Why ChatGPT can’t replace writers?

Remember when computer was invented?

Well, I don’t because I wasn’t born back then!

But I do know that people thought their jobs would be replaced. But it created even more opportunities, didn’t it?

Like I said before, ChatGPT builds on the content that has already been written.

Now imagine if writers stopped writing? ChatGPT won’t be able to create new content. Which means there is always going to be a need for writers who, unlike the ones who can be replaced, create original content.

But that is not the only reason

What’s the other reason then?

The emotional nature of human beings!

Yup, you read that right. But what has our nature got to do with an AI?

EVERYTHING!

People love hearing stories and connecting with other people. Even introverts!

Hey, we need at least one person to survive, don’t we? Sometimes that number increases to 3 when the introvert becomes a selective extrovert.

Ugh, why do I always have to stray from the topic? I apologize!

Back to stories and connections. Gone are the days when articles crammed with keywords used to perform well. Now you need to add honesty, personality and storytelling in your words.

See where I’m going with this?

AI is not human. It’s not capable of emotions! I know some people might say that AI can learn to build a personality. And I would like to ask them a question.

Can you eat pizza all your life, three times a day?

Exactly!

Even if ChatGPT or any AI for that matter, learns to impersonate, it will only be able to impersonate a single personality. Which we’ll get bored of pretty soon.

What happens when an article needs to be written in a tone in which no other article has ever been written. What then?

Use ChatGPT like a tool

Nobody wants to take your job away, they only want to help you. Which is why they have created this TOOL. So, isn’t it better if we just treat it as a tool, use it for idea generation, improve ourselves and create original content?

If anything, ChatGPT will make our lives easier and help us write better!
