Why is UX/Product Designer still among the best paid designer roles?

Before I answer that question, Do you know how diamonds are extracted from the earth?

No?

Let me give you a brief overview. Diamonds aren’t just lying around waiting to be picked up; they have to be mined from deep within the earth’s crust. We usually picture a diamond as 💎, but the truth is, the original diamond looks nothing like the sparkling gem we see in jewelry stores. It has to be cut, shaped, and polished to reveal its true beauty and value.

Just like diamonds, great products aren’t ready-made. UX and Product Designers are skilled craftsmen who delve deep into user needs, meticulously shaping and refining raw ideas into valuable, user-friendly products that shine in the marketplace. Their expertise and creativity transform rough concepts into polished experiences that serve and delight users around the world.

How did this role even come into existence?

While it all started in early 2000s, the origins trace back further. The study on Human Computer Interaction emerged in the 1980s, and people like Donald Norman and Jakob Nielson have made a really strong contribution in bringing HCI and user experience into the limelight. In the 1990s, with the advent of the World Wide Web, there was a growing need to design websites that were not only functional but also user-friendly. This era saw the birth of web design as a profession, focusing on layout, navigation, and user interaction.

Around the early 2000s, the term “User Experience Designer” started to gain traction. Companies began to recognize the need for dedicated roles focused on improving the usability and overall experience of their products. Still, very few people know about this role.

With the launch of first iPhone in 2007 and the subsequent rise of smartphones, mobile apps placed a spotlight on the importance of seamless, intuitive user interfaces. UX design became crucial for the success of mobile applications.

And those were the days when product companies were experiencing a lot of design failures. That’s when companies started to hear some new words in the industry – Usability, Consistency, User-Centered Design, Mobile first approach, etc. This brought in a lot of curiosity in the market and people started to hear the same words from products like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. explaining that these words played a crucial role in their success.

Without them, we’d be navigating a chaotic digital world full of frustrating and confusing products. UX Designers make sure our interactions with technology are smooth, enjoyable and seamless. Let’s me tell you why their role is so crucial.
