Why you should join a B2B team as a product designer immediately

Being a b2b designer for over 4 years already I now always get startled when people wave out b2b job opportunities saying they don’t want their portfolio to be dull.

Like having a portfolio of illustration-heavy applications which you can slice for dribbble shots would make you an ultimate UX designer. Stunning UI is only one part of necessary design skills.

Reason #1. Be a better researcher

What I noticed in comparison of my b2c design experience is that in b2b you can finally gain the opportunity to really dive deep in UX and research frameworks as you can’t ever do anywhere.

The reason b2b teams are more focused on research is that we are as a rule detached from our users.

In most b2c products you can have a gut feeling about a certain solution, because you are most likely your product user yourself or your use cases are highly graspable to you. Consequently, I often see that the proper discovery stage is getting skipped and designers tend to be more focused on producing tons of variants that are then compete on A/B testing.

There is nothing wrong with A/B testing per se, it’s a great tool. The problem is that often it’s the only research method designers get their hands on in…
