Your product isn’t (just) a product! The difference between Product Design and Service Design

Your product most likely exists within a service... design accordingly.

In the tech field, so many conversations and job titles focus on “products”. You hear words like *Product* Development, *Product* Design and *Product* Management.

“Well duh, we’re building products.”

Yes.

And also No.

You’re building so much more.

Products are only a part of what you are impacting when you create a product. The product exists within a service, which exists within a system. Let’s focus on the service scope today.

A service can be anything that helps a user to complete a goal

Services are everywhere. The problem is that many design a product within a service without thinking of the impact that product has on the rest of the experience.
