Overview

This week, the short-term and long-term teams met with CitySeed individually to discuss our initial designs and get their feedback. The long-term group focused on finding locations that would be ideal for a permanent market while also still thinking of what the market would look like. The members of the short-term team each worked on their individual designs, making adjustments based on the feedback from CitySeed and advisors. As the preliminary designs are being finalized, the team is turning their focus towards picking materials and possibly building a prototype of their objects.

Update

The long-term team spent the week looking at all possible locations for a permanent market and investigating potential interventions. In doing this, the long-term team considered factors such as accessibility for both farmers and shoppers, inclusive uses for the project outside of market dates, and the scale of development possible at each potential site. After meeting with CitySeed, the team started working primarily with designs of open-air markets that satisfy the infrastructural needs of CitySeed and include the various communities of New Haven through inclusive built and green spaces.

Site selection process

The short-term team shifted from conception to design, their goal was to come up with several designs of each project. While designing, the team considered how each design can be incorporated into the current state of the market. The Micro-Library would be used to increase awareness of the market, by bringing an element of the market to the local community centers and informing people of the market and its activities. It could also be used as additional seating at the market. The Community Cookbookcan be a tool used at the market to increase customer interaction and diversity in the market. The art pavilion developed into a market hang out for shoppers who want to rest and a public seating area for the general public, generating visual market exposure through visual imagery.

CitySeed Meetings

Both teams met with CitySeed to give them updates on what they have been working on and to get feedback on what they should focus on to better meet their needs as an organization.

Takeaways and further questions for the long term team:

  • What time of day people are free to shop? Can we design around the environmental conditions of that time frame?
  • What other programming would be offered at the market?
  • What is the experience of the market and how can that be shared between locations?

Takeaways and further questions for the short term team:

  • Art booth project might be a more logistical challenge. What market designs would possibly need permits?
  • How would these projects be stored when not in use?
  • Materials used for final construction should be durable to withstand various weather conditions.

Next Steps

In the coming weeks, the long-term team will focus on laying out designs for the several locations they have chosen. The short-term team plans will focus on the design of their projects and consider what materials would be used for the final construction of each design.
