Post-it Game

Our time at Design Club in December was a bit sporadic with Christmas concerts, light switch ons, staff meetings, illness and other festive activities! Big lesson learned, when planning and delivering a Design Club, check your dates and be aware of your seasons!

Due to this we have not quite finished all of the work we intended to get through, but we look at this as a positive with more design club fun happening this year! (We reckon we should get through everything by mid Feb).

Designing their app

Another key element of delivery to consider when running a design club, especially with primary school children, is being realistic about what can be achieved in an hour per week. We have found you get about 30–40 minutes of actual working time per week. Generally the young people take 10–15 minutes to settle in and 5 minutes to tidy up. Depending on the task, concentration can be lost, or questions can arise, so make sure you factor in time for this and that you have relevant examples to hand to explain a tool / process that the young people will relate too.

Gaining empathy for users

In saying all of this the young people who did manage to attend the Design Club sessions before Christmas, made great progress and are now beginning to design their apps. They have been working hard to design the name, logos, straplines and game play, and we are really excited to see their finalised apps over the next few weeks.
