SXSW GO aims to help participants find activity information during SXSW(South by Southwest, an annual conglomerate of film, interactive media, and music festivals and conferences that take place in mid-March in Austin). While hundreds of events were holding at the same time across the downtown area in Austin, it is definitely not easy to figure out what is happening right now and decide where to go.

While the location-based decision would be needed for many users who are willing to find a place with interesting events going on in a short time, SXSW does not provide the way to achieve this goal.

How is happening?

During SXSW, if you want to know the current event, you will definitely download SXSW GO, the official mobile guide to SXSW. With your SXSW GO, you can browse the ongoing events, search keywords to find your favorite ones, and collect events to receive notifications when they start. However, what usually happens is, while there are too many events going on at the same time, making a decision became difficult. What I was always trying to do is find one interesting event which is not far from my current location. Unfortunately, there is not a map showing all the events. To get to know where to go, I have to browse the event list, choose interesting events one by one to click into their detailed pages to check the locations. I can never compare them on the same map.

How is it supposed to be?

While location-based services are widely provided and used, in many scenarios, we always get to see list view and map view for comparing and decision making. The content list helps users view item titles and related important information, like the hotel list with hotel name, star, and price. While users usually need to make location-based decisions, like finding the nearest hotel to book, choosing an event nearby during SXSW. While not every visitor plan beforehand and create the perfect route in advance, usually, after one event ends, they tend to decide the place to go by its location and content. At this time, distance-based ranking and a location-based view can help visitors easily make their decisions.

To help visitors find an event nearby, as mentioned above, the option of switching into map view would help a lot. Also, to meet visitors’ multiple needs, including choosing the most popular one, the one with most space, or the one most related to her interest, a filter with multiple factors setting will be a big help.
