Snapshot of our synthesis and chunking process on Miro.

After reviewing the initial interviews and diary studies we conducted with 12 participants, we met to synthesize our findings and tease out commonalities amongst our users. From there, we developed the following proto-personas to capture these underlying trends:

Personas.

Looking further into some of these personas as well as looking at some interesting individuals we interviewed, we developed these journey maps to unpack our findings with greater depth:

Journey maps.

In the end, we’ve decided to prioritize a few groups in our future intervention studies, combining a few proto-personas based on similar motivations and reactions:

  • Reformers 🙃 Highly motivated users wherein motivation and reaction do not match, resulting in a disconnect that often ends in failed behavior change
  • Routine Semi-Hydrators ⏱ Users who rely on infrequent anchors to motivate water intake, then attempt to make up their deficit by drinking copious amounts at the end of the day
  • Beauticians & Peak Performers 💪 Relatively motivated users who drink water for improved health, appearance, and performance benefits; we’re interested less in designing an intervention for them and more considering them as a case study to inspire interventions!
