Mapping immersive futures.

Katy Perry. (May 19, 2020). Daisies (Live From American Idol Finale, May 17 2020) [Video File]

“It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow.”
Robert Goddard

I’m amazed by the advances in Extended Reality (XR) and all the possibilities this technology brings. This live performance by Katy Perry from one year ago is a great reference. The quarantine has popularized its usage for entertainment, and the outcomes are stunning (visually and technically).

disguise, is the company that created a platform with hardware and software solutions to create live visual experiences. They explain the technical and creative process for that particular transmission in this link. It is just impressive all the pieces that you need to suit to create such great happenings.

‘XR’ is an immersive experience that blends the virtual and physical world, using elements from the VR (Virtual Reality), AR (Augmented Reality), and MR (Mixed Reality), to magnify our perception of what we consider ‘real.’

In this graphic, we can see all the elements used during the performance:

This act required meticulous orchestration and choreography by the performer and the physical and virtual objects in the scenes, with the help of camera motion trackers and real-time visuals and effects generators combined with Spatial Mapping. Look at this graphic to understand how all the layers matched perfectly together in this live music video.

You can find more examples on Notch’s website, the world-leading tool used to design and implement real-time graphics for interactive VFX.

Too many industries can benefit from these technologies to enhance and maximize processes, workflows, and routine tasks that require people to be onsite and open the door to discuss possibilities for the upcoming ‘new normal.’ Some trends are emerging around this area, and the future is promising.
